2009 Skate & Create: C1RCA Broken Dreams

Wednesday, September 9th, 2009

Intro by Dennet Oyanguren, C1RCA Creative Director

The Broken Dreams concept was to put together a short film about skateboarding achieving a few different things. One was to put skateboarding and the viewer in a different environment than normal. The other was to have the team put together obstacles that they would like to see and session out in the real streets, that are good for tricks, as well as challenging and interesting to look at; design them, build them, and put those obstacles in our unique setting. Then finally, telling a story rather than just showing tricks going down, adding a storyline and capturing a feeling, and putting the viewer in a moment in time.

The story we tell in Broken Dreams is a story about a guy who is having a session with his krüe. As the night grew later and darker, he started to get very tired. He was not sure if he wanted to stay or go. He decided to leave the session at around four in the morning. As he’s driving, he began to fall asleep at the wheel. As he dozed off nothing seemed to make any sense, “Am I still driving? Am I still at the session? Have I crashed?” These are his thoughts in his dream state. To achieve this concept and to capture this dark “Broken Dream,” we worked strong as a team bringing all of our thoughts together. Creative, filming, photography, lighting, props, obstacles, beer and raw skateboarding were the tools we used to get this piece done

Summer Camp? Count me in

Thursday, May 14th, 2009

Sunshine and skateboarding go together like trucks and bearings, like concrete and bowls. This summer, Skate Cayman will bring it all together with the first destination skateboarding camp of its kind in the Caribbean. From June 8-August 21, some of the most well-known professional and amateur skaters will descend on Black Pearl, the second largest skatepark in the world, for a completely distinctive camp and family vacation experience.

Kicking off the first week of camp is Summer X Games and AST Champion, Shaun White. White will be skating and signing autographs, and taking advantage of the park’s 64,000+ square feet of progressive, concrete terrain. “I’ve never been to the Cayman Islands before, I’m excited to spend some time skating Black Pearl.” SkateCayman.com will serve as the hub for skater updates and camp announcements surrounding Skate Cayman.

Monday through Friday, Skate Cayman will offer hands-on instruction for campers. Each week will be hosted by a different skate team or pro/am skater that will put their signature style on the camp. Black Pearl is a challenging but rider-friendly park that features three different main courses—expert, intermediate and beginner — with both a flow and street course for each level. The camp will be broken out by skill level, and trained coaches will lead instruction throughout the day. Campers will have the opportunity to sign up for a full week of camp or daily sessions, giving them the freedom to experience all that Cayman has to offer as the ultimate summer vacation destination.

Throughout the summer, campers will have the opportunity to skate with the likes Bucky Lasek, Rune Glifberg, Brian Sumner, Josh Harmony, and the Shut Skates team with more names being added to the roster. Sign up for the Skate Cayman updates by registering on skatecayman.com or follow the camp on twitter under the name “SkateCayman.”

Skate Cayman will provide campers an opportunity to learn from top instructors, skate with pros and experience one of the most unique skateparks in the world for $63 for daily sessions or $282 for the week. All skate demos and autograph signing sessions will be open to the public and there will always be free skating at Black Pearl for those who want to experience the park, sans camp instruction. Campers will be able to book their Skate Cayman sessions by contacting skatecayman@caymanislands.ky.
