Maloof Money Cup 2009 Street Course Sneak Peak

Wednesday, June 24th, 2009

maloof

The Maloof Money Cup, presented by etnies and Monster Energy, today unveils its much anticipated 2009 Street Course.

The course was designed by Geoff Rowley and Joe Ciaglia with design assistance from Colby Carter, Mark Waters and Pro Skaters Lance Mountain, Braydon Szafranski and Erik Ellington. It was inspired by real street spots, including the Sunset up-down corner ledge on Sunset Boulevard, the Barcelona Ledge and the Big Fours and 12-stair from Rincon in San Diego. In addition, there are near replicas of Pier 7 and the Mission “3-up-3 down” in San Francisco, as well as UC Irvine’s 6-stair hubba and rails.

The new bump-to-picnic feature was chosen by the Transworld Skateboarding staff from thousands of entries and suggestions submitted to Transworld’s web site. The winning feature was designed by Chris C. of Manalapan, New Jersey.

“What makes this contest so special is that the Maloofs are real people, they are genuine and they truly
want to make the best skate environment possible,” said MMC GM Tim McFerran. “They listen to the
skaters and ask them what they want to skate in a street course. Because of that, last year we saw a
higher caliber of skaters and tricks that you just don’t see at contests. This year, we had an overwhelming response from guys wanting to compete. All of the biggest names in the skate world, like
Paul Rodriguez and Ryan Sheckler, and guys like Marc Johnson, Mike Carroll, Bryan Herman and Silas
Baxter Neal who rarely skate contests, are competing this year.”

“It’s an awesome course,” said last year’s Street champ Paul Rodriguez. “I’m really looking forward to
skating it this year and just competing with all the amazing skaters that are in the contest. Some of
these guys haven’t competed in contests in years, so it’s going to be really cool.”

Go Skateboarding Day, June 21

Saturday, June 20th, 2009

goskate1

Ahh, yes. It is that time again. The day when it is virtually impossible to go to the skate park and actually get some lines in cause it is so busy. Sorry, I am being a pessimist. This is a great day to get the half-assers out on their boards. That can’t be bad, right? So to all of those out there who weren’t planning on getting a skate in on June 21st, get off your lazy duffs and “GO SKATE!”

Have a great Go Skateboarding day!

Soldotna and Anchorage Skate Parks

Monday, June 15th, 2009

This is the last few pictures from my Alaska vacation. The first park is in Soldotna, Ak. It consisted of some metal ramps, banks, and a pyramid-ish thing. The coping was terrible. It was pipe that had been cut into a 1/3 round and pop riveted / screwed / welded on to the ramps. Really it was kind of attached at best and bounced if you hit it at an angle. Scary. It was a fun park to skate as long as you could dodge the scooter kid ripping around shirtless in sweatpants sporting a mohawk. Ahh locals, what can you say.

The second park in the pics is in Anchorage, Ak. It was a modular plastic and metal combo from Skatewave. Defintely interesting to skate on at first. I found it both slippery and scary, but fun none the less. I can see how this type of surface and system is great for the harsh elements of Alaska but I much prefer concrete. Anyway, enjoy the pics and go skate.

Alaska Trip

Monday, June 8th, 2009

Well I am now back in the land of internet and cell reception. Sorry I was off the grid for a week there. I had the opportunity to skate the first 4 days that I was in AK at 4 different parks. Girdwood, Homer, Soldatna, and finally one in Anchorage. Each was different and challenging in many respects.

I already posted some of the pics from Girdwood here. Next was Homer. This park is on the side of a school and consisted of some metal ramps (read slick) and fun boxes that were placed on some rough asphalt (read road rash). Pretty fun considering where you are. And yes the spine took me down (lame coping hang) and split my elbow. Always good to leave some blood at the skate park. All in all it was really fun until it started to rain. More to come in the next few days.

Here are a few pics of the fun.

Volcom’s Wild In The Parks #2

Thursday, May 21st, 2009

Volcom rolled through the vast Texas expanse and stopped by the Southside Skatepark for the second of the Wild in the Park contest series. Check out this video of these kids destroying their local park and battling it out for top ranks. Definitely some rippers.

Are you bored?

Wednesday, May 20th, 2009

Some days just seem to be longer than the rest. Usually those days are the ones that I wish I was at the skate park with my friends. Check out this video here from Thrasher of Mike Peterson and Kyle Berard blazed through town, hitting the Potrero and Crocker parks with Brian Delatorre, Dave Abair, and Peter Ramondetta. Looks fun.
